UCLA is home to a growing number of groups devoted to exploring different aspects of teaching. These learning communities, or communities of practice, are forums for discussing common interests, learning from colleagues, and sparking initiatives. They are a vibrant part of our campus’s teaching and learning ecosystem.

Campus Media Producers

The UCLA Campus Media Producers group facilitates the sharing of tools, tips, and techniques centered around the creation of media for online and hybrid courses.

Cross-Campus Teaching Innovations Group

The Cross-Campus Teaching Innovations Group (CTIG) was formed to bring together those that are involved in ongoing teaching initiatives to share expertise and experiences, as well as to identify potential synergies in programming and curriculum development efforts underway or newly imagined.

Engineering Faculty Teaching Faculty

This Samueli School of Engineering program includes pedagogy workshops focused on new faculty (but open to all) as well as a summer 2020.

Social Sciences Teaching Improvement Program

The Teaching Innovation Program (TIP) supports the development of new approaches to teaching and learning in the social sciences.

Faculty Improving Teaching Community

The Faculty Improving Teaching (FIT) community is made up of recipients of the Instructional Improvement grants to receive ongoing feedback and support from consultants at both CAT and CEILS, as well as fellow IIP-supported faculty.

Instructional Support Story Swap

The UCLA Instructional Support Story Swap group facilitates the sharing of tools, tips, and techniques centered around instructional technology and design.

The Center for the Advancement of Teaching interacts with a large number of committees in order to remain aware of the needs of the campus community, gather advice from our constituencies, and provide our perspective to campus discussions relating to teaching. Some of the committees we interact with are Academic Senate committees whose purview includes aspects of teaching: Undergraduate Council, Graduate Council, and the Committee on Teaching. Some are non-Senate committees such as the Steering Committee for Online Teaching and Learning. In addition, we are advised by a Faculty Advisory Committee and by several committees that address specific programs within the Center for the Advancement of Teaching, as shown below.

UCLA is a member of the Bay View Alliance, “an international network of research universities exploring strategies to support and sustain the widespread adoption of instructional methods that lead to better student learning.”

CEILS and the Graduate Division host UCLA’s CIRTL chapter. “The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) seeks to enhance excellence in STEM undergraduate education through development of a national faculty committed to implementing and advancing evidence-based teaching practices for diverse learners. … CIRTL uses graduate education as the leverage point to develop a national STEM faculty committed to implementing and advancing effective teaching practices for diverse student audiences as part of successful professional careers.”

The systemwide University of California Teaching and Learning Centers meet annually to share best practices, launch initiatives, and author white papers on pedagogical and professional development issues relevant to teaching at all UC campuses.
